Survey highlights housing bubbles in NZ and Australia

Local Government Minister Rodney Hide says his April 16 meeting with Auckland civic leaders has confirmed a way forward on the Government's plan for "one Mayor, one council" for Auckland.

Mr Hide met with Mayors and CEOs of Auckland's councils to discuss the planned changes to Auckland governance.

He said the success of the meeting will ensure the region's leaders will be working with the government on the region's future.

"What's clear from today is the commitment to going forward with one mayor, one city for Auckland, in a structure which ensures community representation through Local Boards. I am delighted the Mayors and CEOs have committed to working with me and the government to achieve that."

There will a further meeting between the Minister and the Mayors during the week starting April 20 to discuss the transition process.

There has been strong opposition from some Mayors in Auckland to the plan, several of whom attended a meeting at Waitakere City following the announcement of the Government's plan.

Auckland City Mayor John Banks, who didn't attend the meeting, the next day on National Radio variously described it as "a dog's breakfast, rain-dancing, seagull behaviour and shouting at Government from the top of Titirangi.

Waitakere City deputy mayor Penny Hulse said the meeting was held because of concerns over the decision to scrap a second tier of six elected local councils, in favour of community boards.
